Amarillo Landfill Guide: Hours, Fees, Location & What It Takes

Updated October 2026. Landfill rules and hours can change, so call ahead before you load up.

The Amarillo landfill is the City of Amarillo’s municipal landfill, and it’s where most of the city’s trash, bulk items and construction debris ends up. Most people simply call it the Amarillo dump or the City of Amarillo dump. If you’re searching for the landfill in Amarillo, TX, this is the one.

Amarillo Landfill Hours

Since August 17, 2026, the City of Amarillo landfill runs on a single year-round schedule: Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 5 PM, closed on Sunday. The last load is accepted at the scale house at 4:30 PM. The landfill can close on short notice because of weather or operational issues, so call the status line at (806) 359-2056 before heading out.

Older websites still list the previous seasonal schedule with later summer closing times. That schedule no longer applies.

What It Costs to Use the City Dump

  • Free: household waste from Amarillo residents.
  • Charged by weight: construction and demolition debris such as drywall, lumber, shingles, concrete and tile. The fee applies to residents too.
  • Charged: tires.
  • Charged: everything brought by non-residents and businesses.

The city’s announcements don’t list current dollar amounts, so ask at the scale house or call ahead for current fees, and ask what proof of Amarillo residency to bring for free household disposal.

What You Shouldn't Take to the Landfill

Some items need special handling instead of the regular landfill:

  • Household hazardous waste: paint, solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals, motor oil. Ask the City of Amarillo about hazardous waste collection options.
  • Refrigerators, freezers and AC units: these contain refrigerant that has to be recovered by a certified technician. An appliance recycler or removal service is the right route.
  • Electronics: TVs and computers are better sent to e-waste recycling.
  • Scrap metal: often worth money at a recycler instead. See our metal recycling guide.
  • Usable furniture and household goods: donate instead. See where to donate in Amarillo.

Free Brush Sites: A Shorter Trip for Yard Waste

For branches, brush and grass, you may not need the landfill at all. The City of Amarillo runs free brush sites for residents at 3401 Broadway and 3718 S Eastern. They’re open limited days and morning hours, and residents need an ID or a current utility bill. Check the current schedule before you go. More in our guide to City of Amarillo tree limb pickup.

Don't Need a Dump Run? City Pickup Options

Before driving to the Amarillo landfill, check whether city collection can take it. Bulky household items can often be scheduled for curbside bulk pickup, within the city’s rules on size, type and placement. See what the City of Amarillo bulk trash pickup takes.

Tips for a Smooth Landfill Trip

  • Call the status line first: (806) 359-2056.
  • Arrive well before 4:30 PM. That’s the last load at the scale.
  • Separate your load. Keep household waste apart from construction debris and tires, since they’re handled and charged differently.
  • Tarp and tie down your load. Amarillo wind will empty an open truck bed on the highway, and unsecured loads can be ticketed.
  • Bring proof of residency for free household disposal.

The 2026 "Stinky Fire" at the Landfill

In mid-May 2026, a fire that began at the City of Amarillo landfill on Bezner, known locally as the “Stinky Fire”, spread under high winds into surrounding areas of Potter County. Local reports put the burned area at about 2,335 acres, with dozens of homes destroyed or damaged, before the fire was fully contained on May 21. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) conducted air monitoring afterward and reported no air-quality concerns. The city council approved an outside evaluation of landfill operations, and state and city reviews were still under way in mid-2026. The landfill’s new year-round hours were announced in August 2026.

For the latest information on landfill operations, check the City of Amarillo’s official announcements.

Live in Canyon or Outside City Limits?

The free household-waste disposal described here is for City of Amarillo residents. If you live in Canyon or elsewhere in Randall or Potter County outside city limits, disposal sites, hours and fees are set by your city or county. Check with the City of Canyon or your county before loading up.

When It's Easier to Skip the Dump Run

A landfill trip makes sense for a few bags and a pickup you already own. It gets harder with:

  • Heavy debris like concrete, tile or shingles, which is charged by weight
  • Appliances with refrigerant, which can’t just be dumped
  • Big, awkward items you can’t lift safely
  • Time: loading, driving, waiting at the scale, unloading

Let us make the trip

That’s where we come in. Amarillo Junk Removal Pros loads it, hauls it, and sends usable items to donation and metal to recycling before anything goes to the landfill. Prices start at $75 for a single item. For multi-week projects, a roll-off dumpster puts the landfill trip on someone else’s truck. See junk removal pricing.
