What Can’t Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster in Amarillo (and Where It Goes Instead)

A roll-off dumpster takes almost everything a remodel or cleanout throws at it: drywall, lumber, furniture, flooring, shingles. But a short list of items is off-limits, and putting one in can mean a refused pickup, an extra fee, or a safety problem. This guide covers what you can’t put in a roll-off dumpster in Amarillo, why, and exactly where each item should go instead.

Quick List: What Can’t Go in a Dumpster and Where It Goes Instead

Item Where it goes instead
Liquid paint, stains, solvents City Household Hazardous Waste program, by appointment
Pesticides, pool and cleaning chemicals City Household Hazardous Waste program, by appointment
Motor oil and oil filters City of Amarillo free used oil drop-off sites
Car and lead-acid batteries A store that sells car batteries
Tires Tire shop, or the City landfill for a fee
Refrigerators, freezers, AC units Appliance recycler that recovers the refrigerant
Propane tanks and gas cylinders Propane supplier or tank exchange
TVs, monitors, computers Electronics recycling
Asbestos A licensed asbestos professional
Medical waste and sharps Ask your pharmacy or doctor about disposal

Exact rules vary a little between roll-off operators, so always ask for the prohibited items list when you book. The categories above are excluded almost everywhere.

Why These Items Are Banned

Roll-off containers are emptied at a landfill or transfer station, where loads are tipped out and spread with heavy equipment. Three things get an item banned:

  • Fire risk. Fuel, propane cylinders and some batteries can ignite or explode when crushed in a truck or a landfill cell.
  • Pollution. Liquids like paint, oil and chemicals leak out of a load and into soil and groundwater.
  • Regulated materials. Refrigerant, asbestos and medical waste are covered by specific rules for how they are handled, so they need their own disposal route.

Where Each Banned Item Goes in Amarillo

Paint, Chemicals and Pesticides

The City of Amarillo runs a Household Hazardous Waste program for exactly these items. Drop-offs are by appointment: call 806-342-1557, and accepted items go to the city Environmental Laboratory at 4001 S. Osage. The program is for residents inside Amarillo city limits, so bring a current utility bill or driver’s license. Items need to be household amounts in containers under 5 gallons, kept in their original containers with a readable label, and business waste isn’t accepted.

One shortcut: the city says dried latex paint can go in the regular trash. Leave the lid off in a protected spot or mix in kitty litter until it is solid. Our guide to hazardous materials found during a garage cleanout covers the full list.

Motor Oil and Oil Filters

Used oil and oil filters have their own free drop-off sites run by the city, separate from the hazardous waste program. One is the Central Recycling Drop Off Center at SE 27th and Hayes. Call City of Amarillo Solid Waste at 806-378-6813 for the current list of sites.

Car Batteries

Lead-acid batteries never go in a dumpster or the trash. Stores that sell car batteries take old ones back for recycling, and many auto parts stores accept them even without a purchase. Call ahead to confirm.

Tires

Tires are handled and charged separately at the City of Amarillo landfill, which is why most roll-off operators exclude them. The easiest route is usually the tire shop when you buy replacements. Our Amarillo landfill guide covers what the landfill charges for.

Refrigerators, Freezers and AC Units

Anything that still holds refrigerant needs a certified technician to recover it before the unit is scrapped. That rules out the dumpster. Our appliance removal service takes fridges, freezers and window units to a recycler that handles the refrigerant properly, and our guide to refrigerator disposal in Amarillo explains the rules.

Propane Tanks and Gas Cylinders

Compressed gas cylinders aren’t accepted in dumpsters or by the city hazardous waste program. Return grill tanks to a propane supplier or swap them at a tank exchange. For other cylinders, ask the company that filled them.

TVs, Monitors and Computers

Electronics contain materials that shouldn’t be landfilled, and many of them still have recycling value. See our guide to electronics and e-waste disposal in Amarillo for local options.

Asbestos

Older Amarillo homes, especially those built before the 1980s, can have asbestos in flooring, ceiling texture, pipe insulation or siding. If you suspect it, stop and have the material tested before demolition. Removal is a job for a licensed asbestos professional, not a dumpster.

What Can Go in a Roll-Off Dumpster

Worker sorting construction debris into separate piles before loading

Most of what a typical project produces is fine:

  • Household junk, furniture and boxes
  • Remodel debris: drywall, lumber, cabinets, flooring, tile and fixtures
  • Asphalt roofing shingles
  • Carpet and padding
  • Yard waste, branches and brush
  • Concrete, brick and dirt, often in a clean, separate load and a smaller container because of weight

Ask first about: mattresses, large amounts of concrete or dirt, treated lumber such as railroad ties, and anything wet or liquid. Some operators accept these with conditions or an added fee. Not sure which container to order? Our dumpster size guide matches projects to sizes.

Tips to Keep Your Load Clean

  1. Set up a “not in the dumpster” box before work starts, and put paint cans, batteries, chemicals and aerosol cans in it as you find them.
  2. Empty the garage shelves first. Garage and shed cleanouts turn up the most banned items, so sort them before loading.
  3. Tell your crew or contractor the rules. Most surprises come from someone tossing a can of stain or an old battery without thinking.
  4. Tarp the container at night. It keeps out wind-blown trash and stops neighbors from adding their own leftovers.

When Junk Removal Is Easier

If your project is mostly furniture, appliances and household junk, a dumpster may not be the right tool. Our crew loads everything and hauls it away the same visit, including refrigerators and AC units that a dumpster can’t take. We can’t haul hazardous chemicals either, so those still go to the city program. Pricing starts from $75 for a single item, up to about $600 for a full truckload, with a firm price confirmed on-site. See our junk removal pricing guide or residential junk removal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put paint in a dumpster in Amarillo?

Not liquid paint. Dried latex paint can go in the regular trash once it is completely dry, according to the City of Amarillo. Oil-based paint, stains and solvents go to the city Household Hazardous Waste program by appointment.

Can tires go in a roll-off dumpster?

Usually not. Tires are handled and charged separately at the City of Amarillo landfill, so most roll-off operators exclude them or add a fee. Ask your tire shop about taking old tires when you buy new ones.

Can I throw a refrigerator in a dumpster?

Not while it still holds refrigerant. Federal rules require refrigerant to be recovered by a certified technician before disposal. An appliance removal service can take it to a recycler that handles the refrigerant properly.

What happens if I put a prohibited item in the dumpster?

The operator may refuse to haul the container until the item is removed, or remove it and add a fee. Ask for the operator's prohibited items list when you book and keep those items out from the start.
